Getting Started
You should apply for financial aid online beginning on October 1st of each year using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the CA Dream Act Application (CADAA). The applications are free and you can apply even before you’re registered in any classes.
Submit your application as soon as possible to determine your eligibility for financial aid. Since some aid is first come first served, early action is needed for early award letters.

Missing Documents – Verification Process
The Department of Education or California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) may randomly select FAFSA or CADAA applications for a process called verification.
Before we can award your financial aid, we may need to confirm the information on your application.Sometimes this means asking you for additional documents to make sure everything is accurate. This verification process helps us ensure you receive the correct amount of financial aid. If you have been selected for verification, your missing documents will be listed under your checklist on the MyCMC Self-Service Financial Aid Portal.
Your financial aid file is NOT complete until the Financial Aid Office has received and processed all of the required documents. The sooner that you provide the requested documents, the sooner you may be able to receive financial aid.
Commonly required documents include:
- Your Parent (Contributor) Helps Pay for College
If you get financial support from your parent/contributor, you will need:
- Parent/contributor’s tax transcript (if your parent/contributor worked or filed taxes in the applicable year)
- Verification of non-filing from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (if parent/contributor did not file taxes for the applicable year)
If you are unable to obtain a tax transcript or verification of non-filing from the IRS, you may provide a copy of your 1040 tax return with a physical signature in ink or preparer’s information listed.
If you are unable to obtain a verification of non-filing from the IRS, you may complete a certification of non-filing.
Students and parent/contributors should also complete and sign the dependent verification worksheet.
- You Pay for College on Your Own
If you are independent from your parent(s)/contributor you will need:
- Student’s tax transcript (if you worked or filed taxes the applicable year)
- Spouse’s tax transcript (if you are now married, regardless of whether you were married when you filed the FAFSA)
- Verification of non-filing from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (if you and/or your spouse did not file taxes the applicable year)
If you are unable to obtain a verification of non-filing from the IRS, you may complete a certification of non-filing.
Complete and sign the independent verification worksheet.
