Copper Mountain College Student Success Center (SSC) Program will benefit from the Morongo Basin Coalition for Adult Literacy (MBCAL) remaining operational funds ($51,644.89) which were donated to the Copper Mountain College Foundation.

The SSC provides free programs for High School Diploma, GED/HiSET Preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), Math Refresher Course, and Military Academic Skills Program (MASP).

These funds will be used to help ESL and basic education students at the Student Success Center, not with just educational materials, but to assist with daily living expenses as well.

CMC Foundation Executive Director, Sandy Smith shared, “It is an honor to be entrusted to carry out MBCAL’s final wishes.” Plans are being made to begin utilizing the donation and award scholarships for the Fall 2021 semester.

Founded in 1984, the Morongo Basin Coalition for Adult Literacy (MBCAL) relied solely on volunteers to provide free confidential, one-on-one tutoring to illiterate adults over eighteen who needed help with reading, writing, and/or mathematics.

For nearly four decades, these volunteers gave of themselves to help others achieve their potential and to function in their homes, workplace, and community.

Over the past few years, members of MBCAL have enjoyed the opportunity to work cooperatively with the CMC English as a Second Language and Student Success Center programs. However, during this past year, MBCAL Board members suffered various losses.

Additionally, there was the halting of all operations for over a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. At their last official Board meeting, it was decided to dissolve the organization. A commemorative plaque has been installed at the Student Success Center honoring the incredible work of MBCAL.
