F. Roy Greenleaf, Jr. built his legacy at our community college by leaving his entire estate to Copper Mountain College Foundation. Each spring since 2002, the CMC Foundation chooses a student to receive a scholarship that pays all tuition fees, books, and living expenses for an associate degree at Copper Mountain College and then a bachelor’s degree at a California state university. The intent of the scholarship is for the recipient to return to the Morongo Basin to live and work after completing their education. Additional criteria includes a solid academic background, involvement in extra-curricular school and community activities and a strong determination to succeed.
Kamaljot Singh, the 2015 Greenleaf Scholar, realizes his future is in his hands but also recognizes what an opportunity the Greenleaf Scholarship is in his life, stating, “Having the financial support from your scholarship, I will be able to focus on my education and receive the tools I need in order to be successful.” Singh recently graduated from Copper Mountain College and is attending University of California Riverside to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering so he will “be able to fulfill my life and the lives of others by creating electrical equipment that aids individuals medically and mentally.” Kamaljot Singh is the epitome of Mr. Greenleaf’s desire for this scholarship to be available to all highly motivated students.
“The gift that Mr. Greenleaf left when he endowed the Greenleaf Scholarship is life-changing,” according to Sandy Smith, Executive Director of Copper Mountain College Foundation “in today’s world, imagine finishing college debt-free, that is huge.” The scholarship application is available in the Morongo Basin high school counselors’ offices or online at https://www.cmccd.edu/Greenleaf-Scholarship. The deadline for submission is 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
