Copper Mountain College Foundation Presents the 2014 Greenleaf Scholar and Finalists.

    April 23, 2014

Recently four students were recognized by Copper Mountain College Foundation as finalists for the Greenleaf Scholarship.  Jacynda Gutierrez, from 29 Palms High School wants to pursue her doctorate in Psychiatry while Crystalfaith Rickman, also from 29 Palms High School aspires to work in genetics.  Katelyn Sage, a Yucca Valley High School senior hopes to become an anesthesiologist.  While Karina Vanegas, an ICE West success story, plans on a career as a neonatal nurse.  All four women received $500 scholarships as finalists for this prestigious scholarship.  Foundation Executive Director Sandy Smith noted, “The field this year was extremely competitive with 23 applicants for the full-ride Greenleaf Scholarship.  The students go through a rigorous application process, both written and personal interviews and all of the applicants deserve this opportunity.  It is difficult to narrow it to one student each year.”

The Foundation was delighted to present Timothy Hesse from Yucca Valley High School the 2014 Greenleaf Scholarship.  The scholarship will pay tuition, books and fees plus living expenses while Timothy is a student at Copper Mountain College in addition to paying those same expenses while he completes a baccalaureate degree at a four year institute.   Endowed by local banker F. Roy Greenleaf Jr., the scholarship is awarded each year to a promising student who is interested in learning, success oriented, has performed successfully in school and shows a desire to return to the Morongo Basin upon completion of his education.

Timothy’s mother, Margie Estes summed it up by saying “I am grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead for Tim as the recipient of the Greenleaf Scholarship.  I pray that he continues to do well in his studies, and that he will be a credit to his college and his community.  Thank you for believing in him and seeing his potential. The next four years are going to be great!”
