CMC Speech & Debate Take Medals at Fall Championship

    December 6, 2012

On December 2, 2012, the CMC Speech & Debate team sent five students: President Matt Evans, Operations Manager Josh Bates, and members Anthony Matthews, Andrew Dieleman, and Robyn Dice, to the Pacific Southwestern Colligate Forensics Association – Fall Championship Tournament at Cerritos College.  There were thirty-six colleges from California and Arizona in attendance, including: UCLA, four Cal State colleges, twenty-five community colleges, and six private universities.

The students competed in the categories of: Informative speaking, Drama, Prose, Poetry, Duo Interpretation of Literature, Impromptu, Cultural Artifact, and Communication Analysis. Matt Evans is the first CMC student to write and perform a Communication Analysis on the team.

Coach Reyna Velarde stated “This is a difficult event, but Matt was up for the task, and worked very hard on this speech. Communication Analysis is a perfect speech for Communication majors, since it is very similar to what they will write after they transfer to a four year.”

Anthony Matthews and Andrew Dieleman competed in the Cultural Artifact category and received 2nd and 3rd respectively.  Copper Mountain College is proud to continuously have students place high in this event.  Andrew also made the final round in the largest category at the tournament, novice impromptu and was very successful in his final round placing 5th.   Robyn Dice made it to the final round with her performance in novice Prose and received a finalist award.

The team will continue to work hard and prepare for their next tournament at California State University, Long Beach, Winter at the Beach to be held January 25-27, 2013.
