Another Speech & Debate First Place for Copper Mountain College

    October 19, 2012

Copper Mountain College’s Speech & Debate traveled to Irvine Valley College, October 13, 2012, for their first tournament of the year. The competitors were Matt Evans, Josh Bates, Melissa McPheeters, Anthony Matthews, Krystina Mason, and Robyn Dice.

Each member competed in one or two events. Krystina did very well in her two events but did not make it to finals as she was competing against 80 other competitors in Extemporaneous Speaking and almost 50 competitors in Impromptu. Robyn was attending her first tournament, she learned a lot and is excited for her next tournament.

All competitors were entered in the Open/Senior level (as this tournament does not have a novice level).  Showcasing their events for the first time, Anthony Matthews received third place in Poetry and Matt Evans received second place in Prose Interpretation and first Place in Informative Speaking! "I'm proud of the team’s performance at their first speech tournament. Matt Evans is the first participant to gain qualification points to the American Forensics Association- National Individual Events Tournament, and has qualified for two events, Prose and Informative speaking in the National Forensics Association Tournament” Coach Velarde said.  “They've all worked really hard all summer and I think their hard work will continue to pay off at future tournaments."

The team is preparing for its next tournament the Pacific Southwestern Collegiate Forensics Association's Fall Championships on December 1 & 2, 2012.  For more information, please contact Coach Reyna Velarde at rvelarde@cmccd.edu.
