How to Identify Potential Student Referrals
The following as some of the indicators that a student may be helped by the Transfer Empowerment Program.
Extremely shy, non-participative behavior in classroom discussions. One of the things the TEP program tries to do is build a community of learners and boost students’ self-confidence and inter-personal skills.Besides exposure to cultural experiences, the trips we take often help forge bonds among students that otherwise don’t happen on campus.Through personal counseling or advising we can sometimes help students know how to be more assertive in class discussions and personal relationships.
Late or last-minute assignments. If the student is “sick “ on the day an assignment is due or has another excuse why s/he has late assignments or work poorly done because of procrastination, send him/her our way.Our workshops and advising are focused on helping students with time management and goal setting. We provide help with motivation and overcoming procrastination.
Tears, anger, disorganization, and other signs of stress. Especially during exam times, you may have students whose stress level is getting too high for them to manage and it may be interfering with their ability to focus during class, they may “blow-up” for no good reason, they may break into tears, or be agitated when they have not been before.Carmen does a series of “Stress Management “ workshops that students say help a lot.She is also doing a ”Math Anxiety Clinic” that has helped give math students more confidence, test taking skills and reduced their stress levels. Carmen also does one-on-one counseling to help students over “rough spots”.
“Professional Students” - We have students who go from major to major, never completing any of them, earn several certificates, but do not move into the workforce or make progress toward a degree or transfer.Send them down! The major purpose of the TEP program is to move students toward graduation or transfer as soon as possible. We will work with these people one-on-one with transfer or career advice, take them to near-by universities and try to move them toward graduation.
“Profile Students” - If, during class introductions or discussions, you have learned that a student is a first generation college student, is low income, or disabled, that student meets one or more of the criteria for the TEP program. If the student appears to need supplemental instruction, has math anxiety or is having difficulty juggling his/her time, budget or priorities, maybe we can help. Our program is designed to expose students to cultural and other opportunities in the broader world, so if you have reason to believe the student could benefit from or enjoy seeing the world outside the Morongo Basin, send him/her our way.
“I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!” - If you have students who are uncertain about what major to take, what career or careers they might enjoy or how to build a career ladder, we want to see those students too.Maybe we can help them get through CMC in less time and with less money, saving part of their Pell Grant to use at the university.
