Counseling & Matriculation

Matriculation Program

The purpose of the matriculation process at Copper Mountain College is to increase student success through:

•    admission
•    assessment
•    orientation
•    academic advisement

A matriculated student is one who fall under one or more of the following categories:

•    pursue an AA or AS degree at Copper Mountain College (regardless of the number of units a student enrolls in)
•    plans to transfer to a four-year college or university
•    pursue a Certificate of Completion
•    pursue a Certificate of Proficiency

A matriculated student must complete the following in order to participate in registration:

•    take the assessment test
•    attend new student orientation and meet with a counselor or faculty advisor for approval of his/her class schedule

Non-matriculated students who want to enroll in an English; reading; and/or math course or any other course which has a writing; reading and/or math skills prerequisite, must demonstrate their eligibility through either course work completed or assessment results.

New Student Orientation

Orientation is mandatory for all first-time college students. It introduces the students to critical information for student success.  It provides valuable information about financial aid, students’ rights and responsibilities, types of degrees, certificates, college policies & procedures, and support services are presented.   At the end of orientation, counselors will assist students with class selection.

Students who have earned an associate’s degree (or higher) or previously attended college may be eligible for a "Matriculation Waiver" which will exempt you from attending orientation.

New Student Orientation sessions are offered during the summer, as well as November-January. You may call Admissions & Records at 866-366-3791, ext. 4232, or 760- 366-3791, ext. 4232, to schedule an appointment for orientation.

Counseling

Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor each semester. Counselors are available for assistance in:

•    making career choices
•    choosing majors
•    dealing with study problems
•    developing social and interpersonal skills
•    self-understanding and solving personal problems that are affecting their educational progress

Emphasis is placed upon assisting students in their growth and accepting responsibility for their decisions and actions. Counseling services are a fundamental and integral part of matriculation and the total educational process at the community college. Recognizing that each student is unique, counseling faculty believe their primary responsibility is to respect students' individuality, encourage personal development, and foster a climate in which each student attains academic success.

Counseling services are an essential part of the District’s educational mission which includes:

•    assist in interpreting assessment results
•    review past academic performance
•    acceptance of units from other institutions
•    evaluation of coursework from other institutions
•    identify educational objectives
•    create a Student Education Plan (SEP)

There are two general counselors on staff: Andrea Armstrong (aarmstrong@cmccd.edu) and Gregg Chesterman (gchesterman@cmccd.edu). You may contact A&R to schedule an appointment with one of them: 866-366-3791, ext. 4232.
