The History Club sponsors speakers and cultural events at the College, and it raises money for a scholarship for a CMC social science student each year. Funds are also raised to supplement the Greenleaf Library's historical fiction holdings. Professor Cathy Itnyre is the advisor. Student Leadership
The Student Leadership class is designed to help students become more adept at conducting meetings to get projects completed to improve the quality of campus life, connect to others who are interested in contributing to the college, and to learn skills that will enable them to become effective leaders. Most of those in the class are members of Associated Students of Copper Mountain College (ASCMC). Members are either elected or appointed to serve as members of the Executive Committee or the Board of Directors. Interested students are encouraged to register for the class in Student Services.
The STUDENTS WITH ABILITIES Club, which has been in existence since the 1999-2000 school year, is made up of students with and without disabilities. Each year, the club has raised funds through bake sales and other activities to send children to Camp Forrest, the summer camp sponsored by Angel View Crippled Children’s Foundation. In addition, the club also raised money by recycling beverage containers on campus. Due to these efforts, the club has also been able to fund full-time and part-time scholarships for students at Copper Mountain College.
The club has worked closely with Kindred Murillo, the Vice President of Finance & Administrative Services, and Richard Treece, Director of Maintenance and Operations, to improve safety and accessibility at Copper Mountain College. Due in large part to the efforts of students in this club, the college has a handicapped-accessible door in Student Services and soda and snack machines on all three levels of the college campus.
The last mission of the club is to raise awareness and educate people about disabilities. Club members are highly visible participantsin student government and as college ambassadors. In addition, at Copper Mountain College Days, the club sponsored a highly effective awareness-raising event in which people could navigate the campus in a wheelchair. But these efforts do not end at the college boundary line. The club has marched in parades throughout the Morongo Basin, and one club member has introduced a wheelchair division to a local 5K and a 12-mile charity walk.
The Club meets every other week in Bruce's Coyote Kitchen at 2:00 P.M. We discuss Club business and ways to improve the Club, its membership participation and current projects. The Club holds elections each semester in accordance with the club constitution, to give members an opportunity to serve.
Anyone can join and they only need to talk to any club member to get started. Maggie Green is the club president, Dennis Wolfe is the VP, Terry Bonser is the treasurer, and Anne Dawson is the secretary.
The Club mission statement:
Be a voice for all CMC students in eliminating barriers of attitude, architecture and communication, raising awareness and education about disabilities and disability issues for the betterment of Copper Mountain College and the community.
