A biological emergency involves the release of a toxic substance via the mail, explosive device, ventilation system, food or water supply, or aerosol release.

The most common form of biological agent is Anthrax which has a low mortality rate when properly treated.

 

IF YOU HAVE COME IN CONTACT WITH A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE OR LETTER:

  • DO NOT panic.  Stay calm.

  • DO NOT shake or empty content (a sealed or contained substance is static).

  • DO NOT clean up content if spilled.

  • If you can, cover spilled contents with anything available.

  • Leave the room, close and lock the door

  • Wash your hands with soap and water to prevent spread and remove contaminated clothing if applicable.

  • Limit you travel about to avoid cross contamination with other areas

  • Report incident to your supervisor, careful to convey all areas where you have been and advise them to shut down HVAC system

SIGNS OF SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE OR LETTER:

  • Mail is unexpected or from someone you don't know

  • Return address does not match postmark

  • Common words misspelled

  • Leaking substance

  • Stains, dis-colorization, crystallization, odor

  • Wires or tinfoil protruding

  • No return address, lopsided or lumpy

  • Return address is unrecognizable or from a imaginary place
